Budmouth Academy in Weymouth

Health officials are responding after cases of meningitis were confirmed in Weymouth. Three young people have been affected but are recovering. Extra vaccinations and antibiotics are now being offered as a precaution.

UK Health Security Agency is working with Dorset Council and the NHS following three confirmed cases of meningitis in Weymouth.

The cases, identified between March 20 and April 15, involve young people and are all linked to Meningitis B.

Two of those affected attend Budmouth Academy, while the third attends Wey Valley Academy.

All have received treatment and are recovering well.

As a precaution, antibiotics have already been offered to close contacts.

Health officials will now extend this by offering antibiotics and the MenB vaccine to young people in school years 7 to 13 across Weymouth, Portland and Chickerell.

Experts say meningococcal disease does not spread easily, but early action is important to reduce further risk.

Parents, students and staff are being advised to remain vigilant for symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting and a rash.

Anyone showing signs is urged to seek urgent medical attention.
